PATERSON – A disgruntled ex-boyfriend shot another man twice at his ex-girlfriend’s home on Friday before turning the gun on himself, according to police.
Both men are in critical condition at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Lt. Ron Humphrey said.
Jose Martinez, 28, of East 19th Street, went to his ex-girlfriend’s home on the 900 block of East 27th Street at about 8:15 p.m. to confront her new boyfriend, 34-year-old Michael Paredez, Humphrey said.
After exchanging words, Martinez produced a .380 automatic handgun and fired two shots at Paredez, the lieutenant said. One shot went through Paredez’ hand into his torso while the other bullet struck him in the head, according to Humphrey.
Martinez then shot himself in the head.
Humphrey said he could not speculate on the nature of the dispute between the two men until officers talk to witnesses at the scene.
If Martinez survives, he will be charged with attempted murder and a weapons offense, Humphrey said.
