Paterson police Saturday were investigating a non-fatal shooting that occurred around midnight on Montgomery Street near Summer Street.
At least three bullets hit one of the homes on the street, and Saturday morning police evidence markers covered the street and sidewalk in the mixed industrial and residential Fifth Ward neighborhood. One victim reportedly received a ride to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. Police would not release names or other details.
The incident was the 34th shooting in the city since January, and was the third shooting in as many nights within a few block area.
One of the shootings, a drive-by outside a bodega on Rosa Parks Boulevard and 12th Avenue Thursday night, killed a 14-year old boy who friends and neighbors identified as Jose Ruiz. Two others were injured. The other shooting occurred early Friday on Montgomery Street when someone fired on a group of people in Ridgley’s Park, hitting three in the arms and legs.
Police were investigating whether the Thursday shooting was retaliation for a homicide on North Main Street last Tuesday.
Ruiz was the 13th homicide victim this year in Paterson, the same number killed in all of 2009.
