Belleville police reported two armed robberies on Thursday, with suspects in both instances remaining at large Friday afternoon.

A 17-year-old resident was robbed in the first incident, which occurred around 1:40 p.m. in the area of 71 Newark Ave.

According to police, a lone male approached the boy from behind, pulling out a silver-colored handgun, sticking it at the boy’s stomach and saying, “Don’t move or say anything, or I’ll shoot you.”

The suspect checked the boy’s pockets, removed a cell phone worth $500 and fled on foot south on Florence Avenue. The boy was uninjured.

The suspect was described as black, approximately 6 feet tall, with a husky build, dreadlocks, and a close-cropped beard and mustache. He was wearing a “baggy” black coat, dark pants and tan work boots.

At 8:19 p.m., Belleville police responded to the second armed robbery at 8:19 p.m. on the 40 block of Franklin Street.

A 37-year-old Newark man was walking east on Franklin Street when two males walking ahead of him stopped him.

Police said one of the males pulled a silver handgun out of his pocket and demanded, “Give me your wallet.”

As the victim turned over his wallet, which only contained paperwork, the second male patted him down and removed his keys.

The two suspects left west on Franklin Street.

The victim yelled, “Can I please have my keys back?” The suspects then threw the keys into a nearby convenience store parking lot. The suspects were last seen headed south on North Seventh Street at the Belleville/Newark border.

The gun-bearing suspect was described as a light-skinned black male in his 20s, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a slim build and a light beard. He was wearing a gray-hooded sweatshirt. The second suspect was described as a black male in his late teens or early 20s, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build. He was wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt.

“You figure with all this snow, these people would be out shoveling to make money,” Lt. James Giuliano said of the suspects.

Police have not determined whether the two robberies were related.

“Sometimes victims think they saw something about a suspect that isn’t really there,” he said, citing how the juvenile’s description of a “husky build” could be related to a “baggy” jacket.
