Author: Penny Phang

Relationship is one of the most effective tools for spiritual evolution because we’re always in relationships. Think of the web of relationships you have at any time—friends, parents, children, colleagues, teachers, lovers, even enemies. All are, at their heart, spiritual experiences.
Where would you be without all those lessons learned through relationships? Could you have grown into the person you are today? Could you have known the things you know today?
If you think back to all the little things we do for each other, and pay attention to some of the events that have unfolded as a result of them, you’ll learn to recognize the impact we have on one another, everyday.
I want to take this time to remind you that you all matter to many, in more ways than you know. I see this everyday and everywhere, and am grateful for it. Let me give you an example.
In the late 80′s soon after my move from Malaysia to Canada, I found myself being antagonized by a group of students I barely knew at my high school. Maybe I didn’t quite understand their culture; perhaps my English wasn’t perfect; or maybe my clothes didn’t suit their taste. Who knows? But they seemed to enjoy tormenting me. They often threatened me, called me names and threw things at me and laughed.
I dreaded recess because I knew I would bump into them. I was afraid of them. I was afraid of getting in trouble and I was afraid I would disappoint my family if I retaliated or hurt anyone. Most of all, I was angry with myself for feeling so weak.
Feeling scared, sad and angry all at the same time, I kept my composure when I asked my art teacher, Ms. Kroeker, if I could spend my lunchtime in the art studio to practice my artwork. I even convinced her to lock the door so I could “keep a better eye on all the art supplies.” She never questioned me. She was always very good to me.
To this day, Ms. Kroeker doesn’t even know the truth about what she’s done for me just by doing me that “little” favor. You see, while I was locked in the art studio each day during lunchtime, I came to realize that I was a good artist. I soon understood why Ms. Kroeker always praised my work. She believed in me long before I even believed in myself.
Learning to appreciate my own creativity was just my uncovering a piece of the puzzle. There was more. Being locked in at lunchtime gave me a safe place to be, to think, and to do some soul searching.
And with this opportunity to reflect, something inside me began to change. I was sick of feeling scared; sick of being locked in; sick of allowing others to have so much control over the way I felt. I knew that sooner or later I would have to face up to my fears and stand up for myself.
I had to unplug from a negative belief pattern about myself that had no truth but nonetheless had “power” over me. I knew I had to stop judging myself and give myself permission to do what’s right for me.
I was ready. I gave myself permission to be free – to have lunch like everyone else. It wasn’t long before my tormentors spotted me in the cafeteria. I felt something bad was going to happen but I kept my cool and went about my business until one of them decided to creep up from behind to attack me. That was when I lost it. I detonated.
In that little moment in time, every social grace I’ve ever adopted went out the window. I had to do what came naturally—defend myself. Though I held a black belt in Karate at the time, I must admit fighting for real was very different from fighting in a ring. In the ring, we had to follow the rules. In this case, there were no rules. Anything goes.
I was striking moves I didn’t even know I was capable of just to fight not one, but three people off me. After a taste of my “temporary insanity,” all three of them scattered off like mice running away from a cat. I was in shock. Did I hurt someone? Was I hurt? Was I the cat? (Like I said, I was in a little bit of a shock.)
To make a long story short, from that day onward, things were never the same. No one tried to bother me anymore.
I learned something else along the way as a result of all this. I used to think that doing my best means I have to be in the best mood or else I’m just not doing my best. Or my best has to be this awe-encompassing deal, or else it’s not good enough. I’m glad to say I was wrong.
The truth is that your best is going to change from moment to moment, and that’s okay. It will be different when you are healthy as oppose to sick, happy as oppose to sad. Under any circumstance, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.
Doing your best means doing the most natural thing for you in each moment – making decisions to move away from what you don’t want and more towards the things you do want. And if this means you have to take a few steps back in order to move forward, that’s okay, too.
Doing your best also means making each moment for yourself a little better than the last. This does not necessarily mean that the next step you take will put you in an ideal place right away. It may not even make you happy in that moment. But nonetheless it is a necessary step in order to move towards your ideal outcome.
And if those steps you take should somehow lead you to fall hard along the way, that’s okay, too. Just know that sometimes we have to fall in order to rise again—stronger than before.

Not only in the number of lives lost but in property damage. Cars are most likely totaled in a hurricane or at the very least terribly damaged. Once a car has been flooded it is almost impossible to repair and the smell left by the muddy water can be overpowering. Most vehicles that were in the path of a hurricane turn out to be unsalvageable and because of that they are considered “totaled” out by the auto insurance company. If you car is totaled then your insurance company will give you a check for the current market value of the vehicle. If it can be repaired then you will have trouble selling it because it will always have the tag of “salvage” vehicle and you probably won’t want to drive it either because of the musty odor that will stay with the vehicle because of the water damage. It seems like a bad thing to say but, hopefully, your car was totaled and you can start over with a new fresh car.

Believe it or not, there are many criminals that will try to take advantage of people by doing things to a car they’re trying to sell to make it seem like it is okay. Things like painting the vehicle, changing the floor mats, even replacing the front seats and spraying the inside of the car to cover up the overpowering bad smell from the water damage. Scam artists will even go the extreme of transporting the vehicle to a state that has no laws regarding flooded cars and sell them in that state.

There are ways to detect a flood damaged car and the following ways were suggested by insurance companies for you do before you even contemplate buying a vehicle: 1) look for places where mildew might be lurking like under the carpet; 2) check for unusual amounts of rust on metal parts of the car; 3) look for water damage to the door panels or the seat belts; and 4) if the car smells like a strong deodorizer that usually means something is being covered up. If you are considering purchasing a car it is very important to have a professional look at the transmission, the anti-lock brake system and the electronic system.

To protect yourself if you live in hurricane or flood territory you should always have the comprehensive option on your auto insurance policy. This will cover any damage to your vehicle by a hurricane or a flood. If your car is involved in a flood or a hurricane you should call your auto insurance agent as soon as possible with the necessary information. Hopefully, you also have towing and auto rental reimbursement on your policy so that you won’t have extra costs during a time of emergency.

It is certainly no secret that toddlers are an energetic bunch. As parents, we are constantly searching for toys that provide a fun and safe outlet for all that energy and ball pits are perfect for that.

There are a lot of fun ball pits to choose from. Many of the more popular models feature favorite cartoon characters. Dora, Disney Cars or Princesses, Elmo, and Thomas the Tank Engine are just a few of the characters that you can find on ball pits. Some of the other popular ball pits include some with sports themes and the popular Jumpolene ball pit which is available in Castle theme.

Something to consider when choosing a ball pit is the type you want. Some ball pits are inflatable while others are canvas and twist and fold to store. In my opinion, the canvas are more user friendly because you will not need to purchase an air pump to inflate them and they will set up in just seconds. Sometimes convenience can be a parent’s greatest friend!

Most ball pits are extremely portable and can be used indoors or out. This provides another way for little one to enjoy the outdoors on those long, lazy days of summer. You could even take your ball pit along with you on camping trips, to the park, beach, or on family picnics.

You will find that most ball pits only come with 50 – 100 balls which is not nearly enough to provide a truly fun ball pit experience. Most ball pits will require the purchase of additional ball pit balls. Bags of 100 balls usually run less the $20.

Many parents enjoy the advantages of owning a ball pit instead of relying on ball pits at popular restaurants because of the germ risk, that public ball pits can bring, especially during the cold and flu season.

Regardless of your reasons, little ones are sure to be entertained for endless hours with a ball pit and you will likely find that the investment was well worth it.

Teenage depression isn't just bad mood and occasional melancholy. Depression is a serious problem affecting all aspects of the life of a teenager. Left not treated, teenage depression can lead to problems at home and school, self-aversion - even irreversible tragedy, as homicidal violence, drug abuse, suicide. Fortunately, teenage depression can be treated and as a concerned parent, teacher or friend, there are many things you can do to help.
Understanding teen depression.

There are as many misconceptions about teen depression as there are about teenagers in general. Yes, the teen years are tough, but most teens balance the requisite angst with good friendships, success in school or outside activities, and the development of a strong sense of self. Occasional bad moods or acting out is to be expected, but depression is something different. Depression can destroy the very essence of a teenager’s personality, causing an overwhelming sense of sadness, despair, or anger.

Whether the incidence of teen depression is actually increasing, or we’re just becoming more aware of it, the fact is that depression strikes teenagers far more often than most people think. And although depression is highly treatable, experts say only 20% of depressed teens ever receive help.
Unlike adults, who have the ability to seek assistance on their own, teenagers usually must rely on parents, teachers, or other caregivers to recognize their suffering and get them the treatment they need. So if you have an adolescent in your life, it’s important to learn what teen depression looks like and what to do if you spot the warning signs.

Signs and symptoms of teen depression

Teenagers face a host of pressures, from the changes of puberty to questions about who they are and where they fit in. The natural transition from child to adult can also bring parental conflict as teens start to assert their independence. With all this drama, it isn’t always easy to differentiate between depression and normal teenage moodiness. Making things even more complicated, teens with depression do not necessarily appear sad, nor do they always withdraw from others. For some depressed teens, symptoms of irritability, aggression, and rage are more prominent.

Talk to your teen

The first thing you should do if you suspect depression is to talk to your teen about it. In a loving and non-judgmental way, share your concerns with your teenager. Let him or her know what specific signs of depression you’ve noticed and why they worry you. Then encourage your child to open up about what he or she is going through.
